René Magritte (Belgian, 1898-1967) in studio painting Attempting the Impossible, in which he depicts himself painting a nude woman (his wife, Georgette Berger). This is clearly a Pygmalion allusion, but with a twist. As the title indicates, the artist cannot in fact create anything real. The photograph serves as a reminder that the painter in the painting is no more real than his unfinished model. They are equally impossible objects.
