And here are some nice illustration to the Lermontov’s drama “Masquerade” (1835) by Nicolai Kuzmin
Here we have a Mikhail Vrubel’s illustration to “A Hero of Our Time” by Michail Lermontov. It is the famous duel episode, and the man who stands closer to onlooker has a lot of Lermontov’s features. (Lermontov himself was killed on a duel at the age of 26). We missed a birthday of Mikhail Lermontov, great Russian poet. Well, that’s pretty bad and I should blame myself. But let’s celebrate now!
Lermontov is the brightest figure in Russian Romanticism. Surely he is the most important person in Russian poetry after Alexander Pushkin (however I like his poetry more than Pushkin’s). And don’t forget about Lermontov’s prose. He was one of the founders of Russian psychological novel, so his “A Hero of Our Time” was a place where Dostoevsky, Turgenev, Goncharov etc began. So if you are interested in Russian culture&literature and haven’t read “A Hero of Our Time” yet, drop anything and do the reading!

Jean-Laurent Mosnier – Ivan Muravyov-Apostol with daughter Ivan Muravyov-Apostol (1762-1851) was a very educated man who made a brilliant career including military, diplomatic and court service. Particularly, for some time he was a tutor of Catherine the Great’s grandsons Alexander and Konstantin), later made a contribution to anti-French coalition. He had a reputation of a liberal so it’s not a surprise that all his three sons were a Decembrists (the elder Matvei was exiled till 1856, the second Sergei was one of the five hanged leaders and the last Ippolit killed himself after Chernigov regiment revolt)
