Antonio Ciseri’s 1871 Ecce Homo is a bit of a surprising painting. Most obviously, instead of casting the viewer—as the ecce homo scene usually does—as part of the crowd to whom Pontius Pilate displays a scourged Christ in his crown of thorns, we instead observe from behind; ours is a more personal vantage point. Also unusually, Pilate hasn’t tied Christ’s hands with rope: instead, his garments, pulled down off his shoulders, bind his wrists. I’ll admit, though, that as beautiful as Ciseri’s handling of light—and as unusual as his treatment of the scene—may be, there is one embellishment too glaring for me to overlook. Do you see the tall column in the back, with its helical registers winding towards the top? That’s unmistakably Trajan’s Column. Which was built in the second century. In Rome
